Classes & Programs

Teaching a child to ride at home can be tough — the setup isn’t always ideal, fear and parent–child dynamics can get in the way, and it takes patience and focus that can be hard to sustain. Our Ready Set Bike Learn to Ride private class uses proven, playful techniques in a safe environment to make the experience positive for both kids and parents. Children (ages 5 and up) gain confidence step by step, while parents get to support and celebrate the milestone without the stress.

It’s never too late to learn! Many adults missed the chance as kids, or tried but never felt confident enough to ride. Teaching yourself can feel intimidating — balancing on busy streets, not knowing the right progression, or worrying about judgment. Our Ready Set Bike Learn to Ride private class gives adults a safe, supportive space to finally check biking off the bucket list. With proven step-by-step techniques, we focus on balance, confidence, and comfort at your pace — no pressure, no judgment.

Most students learn in 2 to 3 lessons, but every rider is different. Progress depends on factors like motivation, comfort with risk, and natural athleticism. We tailor each session to the student’s pace to build confidence and skills step by step.

We teach riders of all ages. Our Tiny Wheel Time classes start with toddlers on balance bikes. From there, we work with kids 5 and up learning to pedal, teens building skills and road confidence, and adults learning for the first time or returning after years away. We also welcome seniors who want to stay active and enjoy the freedom of cycling in retirement.

Each lesson begins with a Rider and Bike Ready ABC Check to ensure proper fit and safety. We then focus on balancing, steering, and braking skills before graduating to pedaling with confidence. Our step-by-step approach helps riders build control, independence, and joy on two wheels.

A bike rodeo is a fun, skills-based program that teaches kids and adults how to ride safely and confidently. Riders rotate through stations covering bike handling, signaling, hazard avoidance, and other essential skills. It’s not only ideal for beginners—it’s also perfect for kids who have just learned to ride but need extra practice to build control and confidence. Bike rodeos are also a great fit for schools, scouts, and community events.

Equipment & Safety

  • For all classes, riders should bring:

    • A properly sized bike and fitted helmet (we’ll check both during our “Ready to Ride” safety check)

    • A water bottle

    • Comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes (avoid loose clothing that can get caught in the wheels or saddle)

    • Optional: A chair for parents who want to sit and watch

Parents must ensure that their child’s bicycle is safe and ready for class:

  • The bike must be properly sized so the child can sit on the seat with both feet flat on the ground
  • Wheels should spin freely and brakes must function
  • Tires should be inflated until firm
  • Training wheels must be removed in advance

Beginner Lesson Bike Fit

  • When seated, both feet should rest flat on the ground with a slight knee bend.

  • Once ready to pedal, raise the seat so tiptoes still touch the ground.

  • Frame size: Rider should comfortably stand over the bike with 1–2″ clearance above the top tube.

  • Handlebar reach: Arms slightly bent when holding handlebars—never overstretched or cramped.

  • Control check: Brakes should be easy to squeeze; handlebars turn without strain.

  • Wheel size: Match age/height (e.g., 16″ ages 4–6, 20″ ages 6–8, 24″ older kids). Check your bike brand’s sizing chart for details.

All Ready Set Bike instructors are certified by the League of American Bicyclists and covered by the League’s liability insurance when teaching. For everyone’s safety, a signed waiver is required before each class. Certificates of Insurance can be provided for venues upon request.

Cycling is generally safe and fun, but like any physical activity, it carries some inherent risks such as falls or minor injuries. At Ready Set Bike, safety is our top priority—we teach proven techniques, require helmets, and encourage proper bike fit. All participants must sign a waiver before class.
